#1 What is the color of the accent wall in your primary bedroom?
The color of my bedroom accent wall is Dark Olive by Benjamin Moore! It is such a beautiful deep olive color that I would choose over and over again! It’s beautiful for a bedroom, a powder room, or even built-ins in an office!
#2 Where do you get your home inspiration?
I love this question! One place I draw inspiration from is Pinterest! Sometimes there are specific rooms I am looking at or sometimes I just browse the “for me” page to get inspiration for my next DIY project or to dream for the “one day” projects. I also love to look at design books. There are so many talented interior designers out there and I like looking at different styles and pulling things that I like from each. Finally, I get so much inspiration from other creators! There are so many awesome creators out there that have such creative ideas, or have different inspirations themselves, and I love getting to see things in real life. If I can, when I’m on social media, I either save posts/videos or take screen shots to save them for later!
#3 What is your decorating style and how can I figure out what mine is?
First off, you design style doesn’t have to be just one style. Mine is really a mix of modern, organic and transitional styles. I have found that I am really drawn to more earthy and neutral tones because they are calming to me. And neutral doesn’t have to mean beige and white. It can be bold with black or other dark colors like browns and greys, too! In my household, olive greens are neutrals too (haha!). Pinterest is a great way to figure out what your design style is. I recommend saving looks that you like and then looking at common themes. Is there a certain wood tone you like? Do you like more color or neutrals? Clean lines or curvy? Simple patterns or bold? You get the gist! You can make your home look curated by adding pieces that fit your style over time. The latest trends don’t have to be for you! If you try to fill a space all at once, you will end up having regrets. In short, if you are drawn to something, there is probably a reason! It may be a feeling it evokes. My entire inspiration for my primary bedroom came from the artwork hanging over my bed. Not only did I love the print (mountains and water are some of my favorite things), but the colors were so calming and drew me in!
#4 Do I have to have a large budget to have a beautiful home?
Of course not! Although there are some beautiful, high quality pieces I think that are worth investing in in order to stand the test of time, I think that there are lots of affordable options that are still great quality. Many of the pieces we have in our home are more budget-friendly. Often times, I will wait for pieces I have been looking at to go on sale before I purchase. Utilizing platforms like LTK are a great way to keep tabs on pieces you love because it will alert you when there are sales.
Not only can you find affordable new options out there, but thrifting is another great way to get beautiful pieces into your home without spending much money! Sometimes they might require a little more effort to spruce them up (new paint, patching and/or staining, new hardware, etc) but the extra effort can be worth it for a low price! Plus, you get a unique piece that likely many people won’t have! FBMP is also another great option to find pieces old or new at discounted prices (you just might have to deal with lots of inquiries before anything sticks. IYKYK ๐
We have a single income in our home at this time, and I am an impatient person when it comes to making changes in my space! This forced me to look into options outside of hiring professionals to do jobs because, YIKES! The price tag can be so steep. My husband has always been very handy. He has done lots of things around our home to save money. But in the last 2 years I have felt so inspired by other women online to do projects around their homes that I wanted to try, too! I will say I haven’t felt completely comfortable to do anything on my own yet, but I know I am getting there each project we do! I watch lots of tutorials on YouTube and Instagram, as well as read blogs to help with projects. We have been able to update our bedroom, both my sons’ rooms, our powder room, and our laundry room over the course of 2 years. If we hired these out it would have cost significantly more, causing these projects to have to be spread out and we wouldn’t have as much freedom to purchase other things for our home or hire professionals for projects we truly can’t do on our own (like pouring a new concrete driveway)!
#5 When decorating a room, what do you start with?
It’s important to think about how a room will function and who will be using the space. For example, we have a formal living room that functions as our playroom. However, it is in the front of our house and is open to our dining room. For this reason I wanted to have closed storage to lessen the look of clutter, while still being able to store all my kids’ toys. Similarly, I wanted there to be furniture they could use — chairs to sit and read in, a coffee table to play games on or color, and a soft rug for playing on.
Next comes the fun part — design! For me, I always start with a moodboard! This is the easiest way for me to visualize things. Sometimes I start out one way, and I don’t like the way things pull together. Then, I can easily switch things out to get the feel I desire. Paint is a great place to start. Are you looking for something more neutral or more bold? After you decide on this, it will be easier to pull specific pieces to go in the space. Again, you can search Pinterest or social media to find looks that you like.
