Super Hero Birthday Party – Liska Living

Hey y’all!

I’m finally getting around to sharing more about my boy’s birthday party. It was so much FUN! It was chaos, but it was sure fun. This was very much a DIY party at our house. Which, reminds me of how things were growing up — no major frills, just good ole fun. It definitely took some extra work and cleaning hosting, but I loved doing that for my kids. I’ll share all the games we made and the cute touches we added for decor.

Let’s get into it…

We had 5 games that the kids played. There were more that we could have added, but we felt like this was a good number for the attention span of the kids. We probably would have changed a few things had our kids’ birthdays been in the summer time and we could have done it outside, but we made do! We ended up splitting the kids into 5 groups for the 5 games and had them rotate. This was easiest to keep them entertained without having to wait in line since we had 20 kids playing!

First up was “Pin the Star on the Shield”. I used a piece of poster board from the dollar store and painted a shield onto it. Next, I used a second piece of poster board and used a star stencil that I printed and cut out to make 5 stars (enough for each person per group). We used a blindfold, spun the kids around, and voila! The kids had fun seeing where their stars ended up.

Next was “Spidey Web Toss”! Since we couldn’t be outside, using silly string for web shooting wasn’t really an option. This would have been a total hit if that were the case so would highly recommend if you’re doing it outside! They sell them at the dollar store. Instead we used a Hula Hoop and used masking tape to make the shape of a web. The goal was to throw a ball to try to get through the web!

Next up was “Batman Buckets”! A take on the classic Bozo Buckets. We got the baskets at the dollar store and then I printed the Batman logo and laminated them and taped them onto the baskets. Easy peasy!

The fourth game we played was “Thor’s Hammer Toss”. We used plastic cups that we stacked up and used a small foam Mjolnir that we had from a game. They do sell an actual Thor’s hammer, but you could also DIY one using a large tissue box, paper towel roll, and some brown construction paper and aluminum foil! If we had a larger one we probably would have opted for some larger blocks to knock down.

And last but not least, “Hulk Smash”! This was by far the most popular game. I got foam board, green tissue paper, and black solo cups from the dollar store. We superglued the cups onto the board and let them dry overnight. Then, I added a few pieces of candy, put tissue paper over the top and used a rubber band to secure it. The kids absolutely loved this! The solo cups were the perfect size for their little hands, but if you were doing this for older kids you might want to use a bowl. If you wanted to be extra, you could always get the huge Hulk hands and just smash the cups with them instead!

This is a rather inexpensive way to play a bunch of games at your own home! If you had the space or could do it outdoors, you could also consider doing “Hawkeye Archery,” “Flash Dash” and obstacle courses for general super hero agility training. There are tons of options and it’s fun to be creative with it!

In terms of decorations, we had a little wall set up with streamers, birthday balloons, and a “happy birthday sign” made out of different superheroes. You could also create a city backdrop if you wanted to. Both would make a great backdrop for photos or to have a table near for gifts or food.

We also had a table with food and I made little editable food labels that I purchased from Etsy. Again, another great way to be creative depending on what you’re serving! We didn’t serve a meal at this party due to the timing of it (another way to cut down on costs), so we made sure we provided a variety of healthy food and treats with a fun superhero theme!

I forgot to get a picture with the cupcakes on the “Kryptonite cupcake” tower (which was quite literally a tower), but they were so cute! Again, I kept cost down by getting cupcakes with frosting in the main superhero colors and then stuck character toothpicks into them for added flair. Since my oldest’s favorite is Spiderman, I also got these.

We had the kids build their own goody bags this party. At each station they got some kind of prize, whether it was candy or non-food items. I try not to fill goody with too much “junk.” Of course they are fun for the kids, but as a parent I know that sometimes it’s a pain to deal with all the little trinkets. This is actually the second year in a row we have done a super hero theme (although last year we didn’t host at home). I will share what we used last year as well as what we used this year. Both years the kids were happy with what they had and it was all things that could either be re-used or would be used once. Last year we got all the kids these fun superhero masks, capes, and snap bracelets (these were all great quality), along with some tattoos, stickers, and silly character straws. I had several moms say that their kids still love these and use them still today! I am linking some different options here, as the ones I personally bought are no longer available. This year we opted for these party favors. We love these for on-the-go! The kids also got key chains and more stickers and snap bracelets. I will say that the snap bracelets in this set were not nearly as high quality as the ones from last year.

This fun Super Hero Name Game was also super fun for the kids and adults alike! We left it out during the party by all the food so people could come and figure out their own Super Hero name!

Do you have a kid that loves super heroes? Would you do something like this? What do you think – do I deserve an A++ for this?!
