Powder Room Makeover
Hey, all!
I am SO excited to share a home update that has been a few months in the making! We started our powder room makeover back in December. I somehow didn’t take any before pictures (only videos). Oops. Anyway, when we first moved in, it was this dark grey. It wasn’t great. And because this is the only room in the house with no windows, we have zero natural light. So we repainted it about a year after we moved in with some existing paint we had, just to lighten it up. But after a little while, I just wasn’t feeling it and wanted to make the space feel more modern and more me. So I began planning! (FYI, including all sources/links at the end!)
Here is a reel I shared on Instagram with my inspiration for this powder room!
BEFORE
So, back in December, we painted the bathroom “Alabaster” by Sherwin Williams. I absolutely love this color! It’s a beautiful white. It’s a pretty neutral white, but maybe slightly warm. The next thing we did was switch out the mirror. I actually repurposed a mirror that I had in my son’s room. I decided it would look so much prettier in this space. Plus, here it would actually get seen, whereas when it was in my son’s room, not many people would see this beauty! And finally, we swapped out all the hardware. We had matched some of the hardware that was in here originally — it was a polished nickel. It was never my favorite, but for the time being, it was fine. But I really wanted a brushed brass/gold in here. I think it TOTALLY elevated the look of this space!
DECEMBER PROGRESS

The final step was to add wallpaper on the wall the door was on. We used peel and stick wallpaper. I wasn’t quite ready to take on real wallpaper, plus I wanted to be able to easily remove it if we ever wanted to. Not to mention, it’s a bit of an investment! There was a wallpaper that I really wanted, but it was a bit pricier than some other options out there. So I looked for something different. Initially, I opted for a wallpaper at Home Depot by Rifle Paper Company. It was very pretty, but in person I didn’t love it as much as I did online. I couldn’t stop thinking about the original wallpaper and so I ended up returning the Home Depot option and splurging for the other (it wasn’t crazy different, but it was slightly more per sq. ft.). Let me just tell you, I am SO happy I didn’t compromise! It is SO beautiful!
When first planning this part of the project, I considered doing the wallpaper on the wall the mirror was on, but I felt like this wall was busy enough and I really wanted people to almost be “surprised by it.” When you look in the mirror, I love that you get a glimpse of it, and it’s so pretty I wanted un interrupted views of it. Having a full wall of it makes it just SO gorgeous! I absolutely LOVE it!
AFTER

I will say, having never done anything like this, there was a little bit of planning and a learning curve that went with it. If you were just going to do this on a blank wall, it would have been no problem — especially with two people! However, we had a door and a light switch to work around. The door was difficult because we had about a 1-inch sliver on the other side of the door frame that we had to go around. We ended up cutting it more down to size so it was more workable. We did the same around the door frame on the other side. When we got to the light switch, we took the cover off and marked the corners of the switches on the wallpaper, poked a hole in the middle, and cut to each corner and then removed the middle. I would suggest two people for this part! The other tip I would give, is to make sure you leave at least an inch on either end of the wallpaper to give you clean cut and make sure everything is well covered. We didn’t do this (not necessarily intentionally ?) and it did turn out fine, but it would have been nice to have a little more wiggle room than what we had. Another thing we didn’t do, but I would recommend doing, is starting with a plumb line. You can use a level to draw a level line and that would definitely help for lining up. We just kind of used the level as we went. The rest of the wall that didn’t have work arounds was no problem. All in all it took us 2 nights and a nap time to work on this. But 10/10 would recommend doing this as a beginner DIY project!

What do you think of the final product?! Would love to hear in the comments!
