Transitional Winter Decor – Liska Living

Hi, friends!

That post-Christmas lull can be hard. We’ve been full on decor with fall, Halloween, and the holidays. So afterwards can feel kind of hard. Things feel bare. And while I can appreciate a clean, uncluttered home, I still like it to feel inviting and homey! I don’t like to start decorating for spring until March, but I crave that warm, cozy feeling I get at Christmas time. Today I’ll be sharing some tips that I use in my own home to create this.

6 Tips for Decorating after the Holidays:

1. Purge, Edit, Organize.

First of all, if you haven’t read the “Minimalista” book yet, I highly recommend it! It makes some really great points about how we live and how we can limit all the “stuff” we have in our lives. Anyway, if you haven’t taken your Christmas decor down, that’s okay! Honestly, take this time as an opportunity to organize your home. I do this every year. Especially with new toys in the house from the kids’s gifts, it’s time to pair down what we have. See my post on post-Christmas organization for more inspo! It’s a great time to do a year-end clear out of that you might not need/use anymore. Use it as an opportunity to figure you what you have in your home and what you might want to replace or be searching for in the new year.

2. Add cozy textiles.

I love to add warm blankets/throws on our couch as well as into the bedrooms. It’s a great way to make the space feel inviting and somewhere that you just want to snuggle up! Plus, with changing temperatures, sometimes you just want to have an extra layer to throw on or off.

3. Replace holiday greens with fresh foliage and winter stems.

I love to use cedar or pine stems in my home during Christmas time and beyond. I typically try to invest in these pieces because they can be used throughout Christmas, but also the rest of winter. I also love to use pinecones and bare stems or even Eucalyptus.

4. Re-create the glow.

I don’t know about you, but the glow of Christmas time is my absolute favorite. I think it is so nostalgic for me that it just brings all the Christmas magic back. I am always sad to pack away the tree for that reason. So, I use candles (Fontana Candle Company is my personal favorite because it is Made Good Certified!) throughout my home. I also have flameless candles that help with that glow! They are great for getting that perfect low-light glow, but safe for grabby kids! Plus, who doesn’t love that they can be turned on and off by remote? Table and floor lamps are another great way to introduce light without it being over the top. I love having less light at night time as I wind my body down for the night.

5. Add artwork to reflect the seasons.

I love Collection Prints for this reason. They have a wide variety of seasonal prints that you can bring into your home to make it feel wintery without feeling Christmas-y. If you have a frame TV you could do this via your TV! Collection Prints even offers an option like this. Or turn your regular TV into a frame TV via YouTube!

6. Invest in new decor.

Sometimes after purging and editing we figure out that our styles have changed. This is a great opportunity to invest in pieces that fit your style and will give your space a refreshed look. I caution you with this, however, because I think this is an opportunity to take your time to look for pieces that you love and that will not just fill a space. I find that decorative books, vases, and decorative bowls, are a good place to start because they can be used in multiple places throughout a home.
